Description
Oval-shaped Tsuba made from iron. The Take (竹, bamboo) pattern is designed with the Nikubori Ji-Sukashi technique (a type of openwork). This work's exquisite handicrafts increase its value. Also, please focus on this Tsuba's material. As mentioned above, it is iron. It has a pretty good quality, and it makes a glossy texture for the surface. If you touch it, you will feel its smooth touch.
Bamboos grow neatly towards the sky, and it is vital so that this motif represents nobility and strength. According to a Chinese legend, Houhou (鳳凰, Fenghuang) eats the fruits of bamboo. Therefore, bamboo has been considered a sacred plant. Also, as it keeps its green color even in cold winter, people thought the bamboo pattern shows eternity and longevity. The Take pattern is one of the familiar designs for Japanese people since ancient times.
This Tsuba is recognized by The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, which is known as NBTHK. According to its certificate, this Tsuba was made by Otaka Hironaga (大高 寛長), who did well in Musashi area (武蔵, part of Tokyo, Saitama, and Kanagawa prefecture today) during the late Edo period. You could find his signature near the center hole of this Tsuba. It is said Hironaga was good at elaborate carving, as this Tsuba proves. We hope you would appreciate this fantastic Tsuba.

What is Tsuba?
Tsuba is the hand-guard of the Japanese sword. High-class Samurai wore his katana sword with its beautiful sword mountings such as Tsuba. The front design of Tsuba tends to be more decorative as this part was often seen by other Samurais when he was walking on the streets.
