    Judith Anderson (born Frances Margaret Anderson) was an Australian actress who had a successful
    career in stage, film and television. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the
    housekeeper Mrs. Danvers in Alfred Hithcock's
    Rebecca
    (1940), starring Joan Fontaine and Laurence
    Olivier. In
    Laura
    (1944) she played Ann Treadwell opposite Gene Tierney and Vincent Price. In
    Cat on a
    Hot Tin Roof
    (1958) she played Big Momma Pollitt opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. She won
    a Tony in 1947 for her performance in the title role of Medea and won two Emmys for her 1954 and 1960
    performances as Lady
    Macbeth. She was awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire
    in 1960 and
    thereafter was often billed as "Dame Judith Anderson".
